Concrete NDT

Visual
Inspection

Systematic surface condition assessment — the critical first step in any structural evaluation program.

Systematic Surface
Condition Mapping

Visual inspection is the fundamental baseline of any concrete condition assessment. Conducted by experienced geotechnical and structural professionals, it provides a systematic, documented record of all visible surface defects — from hairline crazing to advanced delamination and section loss.

The visual inspection report drives the scope of all subsequent non-destructive testing. Defect locations, severity ratings and recommended investigation zones are mapped onto structure drawings and delivered as a georeferenced condition register.

Visual inspection is performed prior to all intrusive or non-intrusive testing — ensuring survey resources are directed to where they add the greatest diagnostic value.

Crack Mapping &
Severity Grading

Cracks are catalogued by type, width, length, pattern and probable cause. Each crack class carries different structural implications — a map-cracked surface from plastic shrinkage is categorically different from radial cracks around rebar at cover depth indicating active corrosion expansion.

Hairline< 0.1 mmMonitor

Medium0.3 – 1.0 mmInvestigate
Wide> 1.0 mmImmediate Action

Element
Condition Register

Each structural element is assessed against a standardised condition scale, enabling consistent comparison across elements, structures and inspection cycles.

1 — Sound
No visible defects. No action required.
2 — Good
Minor surface marks. Routine monitoring.
3 — Fair
Surface defects present. Continued monitoring recommended.
4 — Poor
Significant defects. NDT investigation required.
5 — Critical
Structural concern. Immediate investigation and intervention.
